Old Parliament House: After the Fire

This documentary tells the story of the fire remediation project that many conservators, construction workers and MoAD staff worked together on, to restore the Old Parliament house after its front doors were set alight during a 2021 protest.

Crux has worked with MoAD since 2019 and have built a trusted relationship with them which meant they knew we could tell this story in the way they needed it told.

The Brief

MoAD tasked us with creating a documentary that focused on the positive teamwork that came out of the fire remediation project, instead of the events that caused the damage.

We developed a creative concept for the video which included showcasing photos MoAD had of the damage from months prior using 2.5d photo animation and bespoke sound design to bring the experience to life.

Crux produced this documentary, having conducted long-form interviews, sourced archival media from state libraries, the National Archive of Australia and news reports from various networks, to do the story justice.

MoAD and the Crux team worked together to release the documentary in time for the Old Parliament house’s grand reopening after the project was completed.

The damage sustained from the fire spread far beyond the entrance to Old Parliament House, with conservationists discovering ash in rooms towards the heart of the building.

Crux was brought onto the project half way through the fire remediation process, so we were able to capture snapshots of construction, cleaning and restoration in progress.
